Obituary

Humble yourselves in the sight of the Lord and He shall lift you up. James 4:10

On December 14, 2022, George O’ Bryant Houser boarded his chariot to heaven. Affectionately known as Uncle George by many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by two wives and five siblings.  His life was characterized by love and care for anyone who had the privilege of knowing him.  During his service in the Korean War, the rim of his helmet stopped a bullet that would have surely killed him.  Following his military service, George was a skyscraper window washer in New York when he fell several stories onto a canvas-top truck.  On another occasion his window washing belt broke, and he dangled for over an hour before being rescued. His surviving these calamities was a sign that God had another plan for him.

After the death of Uncle George’s first wife, he married Aunt Lola. One phrase that captures the essence of Uncle George is, “He was a good man.” The source of Uncle George’s goodness was found in his deep belief in God. It was this belief that guided his every interaction with those he met.  Uncle George often spoke of the intelligence and talents of his siblings never including himself in the hierarchy of the Houser clan’s intelligence.  Perhaps that is what led him to constantly pursue knowledge.  At the age of 92, he taught himself how to use computers engaging in zoom sessions and searching all manner of information.

Uncle George’s deep belief in God lead him to become a modern-day Good Samaritan.  He would stop on the highway to help someone he didn’t even know and always with a smile.  At the onset of his physical challenges, nieces and nephews came from California, North Carolina, Texas, and here in Georgia to take care of Uncle George.  For many of them, Uncle George went from being an uncle to being a great father figure.  Even as his body failed him, his spirit soared.  In the thrones of his pain, Uncle George regularly reached out to Pop, his nephew, to check on his condition.  Never did he complain about his condition.  In fact, his pet response was, “I’m doing just fine!”  For all those who have gathered here for Uncle George’s homegoing do not do in sorrow or sadness, but in joy and celebration of the life of Uncle George.
