Esther Lee (Bryant) Griggs was born December 22, 1922 in Coffee County, Ambrose, GA to the late Minnie Lee Bryant and Wesley Bryant. She attended elementary school in Coffee County before going to Cuyler-Beach High in Savannah, GA. She then went to Mather High School in Beaufort, SC, where she graduated as salutatorian of her class, she also received diplomas in cosmetology and business.
At the age of twelve Mrs. Griggs joined the Mt. Ebel Free Will Baptist Church in Ambrose, GA. After the death of her father in 1937 her mother moved to Groveland, GA where Mrs. Griggs then joined Jerusalem Baptist Church. Mrs. Griggs was joined in holy matrimony to the late Rev. Robert J. Griggs and move to Plainfield, NJ in 1945. While living in New Jersey she become a faithful member of Shiloh Baptist Church serving as a missionary, on the mother’s club and on the women’s fellowship. After returning to Georgia she moved her church membership back to Jerusalem Baptist Church in Groveland, GA where she remained a very devoted member from her youth. Mrs. Griggs was always a serious minded person who was always seeking to learn about ways to live right. She loved people and was always willing to help others. Proceeded her in death mother Minnie Lee Bryant, father Wesley Bryant and one son James Griggs.
She leaves behind five sons Joel Griggs (Shirley) of Inkster, MI, Willie Clarence Griggs (Eunice) of Detroit, MI, Robert N. Griggs (Mary) of Claxton, GA, Gregory A. Griggs of Hagan, GA, Alton L. Griggs (Annette) of Statesboro, GA; fifteen grandchildren, thirty-three great grandchildren, sixteen great-great grandchildren and a host of relatives and close friends.
