Alton Griggs Obituary

Alton Levon Griggs, 64, of Claxton, Georgia, passed away peacefully surrounded by his loved ones. He was born on November 17, 1960, in Plainfield, New Jersey, to the late Esther Lee Griggs and Robert James Griggs.

Alton was raised in Plainfield, where he graduated from Plainfield High School. While living in New Jersey, he was a member of Shiloh Baptist Church and displayed a love for music from an early age. At the age of fifteen, he traveled with the Newark Boys Chorus to Rome, Italy, where he had the honor of singing for the Pope at the Vatican. His passion for music remained throughout his life, as he continued to enjoy singing.

In 1992, Alton relocated to Georgia and became a faithful member of Jerusalem Baptist Church in Groveland. Throughout his life, he was known for his strong work ethic and dedication. He worked at Hayes Inc. as a forklift operator, Milliken and Company as a machine operator, and DSI Logistics in Port Wentworth, Georgia, where he was forklift and clamp certified. In his spare time, Alton enjoyed landscaping as a hobby, especially taking pride in maintaining and perfecting his own yard.

Alton cherished visiting New Jersey, where he enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren and extended family. He was a man of discipline, yet kindhearted—always willing to help out in some type of way. Beyond work, he found joy in fishing, collecting guns, cars, reading, traveling, singing, firearms, and sharing meaningful moments with his family.

He leaves behind his beloved fiancée, Annette Mincey; his devoted daughter, Shanae Major (Lamar Bracy) of Somerset, New Jersey; step daughter, Erika Nicole Stewart of Germantown, MD; grandchildren Lamar Jr., Lanyla, and Lauryn Bracy, and Kayon Woods, all of Somerset, New Jersey; and a host of siblings: Joel and Shirley Griggs of Detroit, Michigan; Willie Clarence Griggs of Detroit, Michigan; Robert Nolan (Bobby) and Mary Griggs of Claxton, Georgia; and Gregory Allen Griggs of Claxton, Georgia. He is also survived by a host of family members, nieces, nephews, and friends, all of whom he loved dearly.

Alton will be remembered for his loving spirit, his devotion to family, and the joy he brought to those blessed to know him. His legacy will live on through the many lives he touched. He wasn’t afraid to speak his mind, and those who knew him valued his honesty and strength. Alton would not want us to be sad—he would simply want us to “keep it moving.”

Scripture: John 14:1 — “Do not let your hearts be troubled. You believe in God;
believe also in me.”
